ROCHESTER, Minn. – Imagine quitting your job to embark on a 9 month journey sailing around the world, without any modern technology. That’s what Nabil Amra is doing. He’s participating in the Golden Globe Race, where skippers race sailing around the world. Nadir Amra is his cousin and lives in Rochester. He said when he first found out about his cousin’s decision, he was nervous. “To go solo, without phones and any electronic equipment he usually uses, that seems kind of dangerous. But it’s something he wanted to do,” Nadir said. “We’re always going to be worried until he gets home.”

When Nabil Amra sets sail around the world on Sunday, he’ll be doing it for two reasons. The first is to win. Amra, from Minneapolis, is one of 18 sailors competing in the 30,000-mile Golden Globe Race, which will depart France on Sunday. However, while Amra relies on his abilities and knowledge, there’s an entire group of people who will simultaneously be relying on him for something much larger. This brings us to the second, and more important reason Amra is competing — to bring awareness to the plight of Palestinians in the Middle East.

L’audience potentielle était estimée à hauteur de 500 000 téléspectateurs. (Wikipedia)

The Golden Globe Race 2018 is neither fast nor glamorous. Instead, it’s a throwback to a simpler time when adventure was man-against-the-sea, and the sea usually won. It is a re-creation of the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, an event that took place 50 years ago and remains one of the true watershed moments in offshore racing. 19 sailors represent one of the most diverse groups ever assembled for a circumnavigation, with sailors from 13 different countries taking part: including two, Istvan Kopar and Palestinian-born Nabil Amra, from the United States.

270 days. That’s how long Nabil Amra hopes it takes for him to sail around the world, as part of the 2018 Golden Globe Race. The trek commemorates the 50th anniversary of a 1968 round-the-world yacht racem approximately 30,000 miles long, starting in France on July 1. As part of the race, the Chaska native will be sailing as the original competitors did, solo and without modern devices, like a GPS. Amra has spent over $300,000 of his own money and has quit his job as a U.S. Bank foreign exchange trader in Minneapolis for the trip of a lifetime.
